Books are a great way to learn anything and a deeper way to pass on centuries of knowledge of tooling and skills. This has been an important part of Mr. McDaniel's classes by first reading the material, then seeing the techniques in person and then practicing them yourself.
Mr. McDaniel gained recognition and acclaim for writing and illustrating the award winning book, “A Blacksmithing Primer, A Course In Basic And Intermediate Blacksmithing” in 1998. Blacksmiths, blacksmithing groups and even colleges and schools around the world are using this book to teach basic to intermediate forging. Currently it has sold over 30,000 copies plus it has recently been updated and printed as a hardbound book with lay-flat binding.
In the summer of 2014, Mr. McDaniel wrote his second book, “Hydraulic Forging Press for the Blacksmith”. This book explains the safety, different types of press frames, how to figure which frame style, tonnage and ram travel you need for your shop and shows the tooling that you can make to make a forging press the most versatile piece of equipment in your shop.
He does stress that no one should even consider any piece of power equipment such as a power hammer or forging press, until one has 3-5
